A sink overflow is a problem faced commonly by home residences. While it may not be the worst problem, an overflowing sink is certainly unpleasant and troublesome. An overflowing sink is usually caused due to a clogged pipe. Debris gets trapped in the drain pipes leading to clogging. Fortunately, you can fix an overflowing sink can at home if you have the necessary equipment.

Get the Plunger

A popular and easily available method to repair a sink overflow is to use a household plunger. A clogged drain can most often be cleared by a plunger. Place the plunger’s suction cup over the drain to cover it completely and use both hands to apply a push and pull pressure. The upstroke and downstroke movement creates pressure on the water to push down the debris clogging the pipe.

If you are using the plunger on a double sink with two clogged drains, then cover one with a wet rag or use two plungers. For a bathroom sink, seal the hole with a wet rag while plunging.

Check the Drain Trap

If the sink clog is not cleared by plunging, then you must check the trap. There are traps in every drain that hold some water to prevent the sewer gas smells from escaping the drain. Unscrew the trap to inspect and clear any piled up debris. Remember to place a water container under the trap before unscrewing it, to collect the water dripping from the pipe.

Use the Plumber’s Snake

If the trap isn’t clogged, the problem may be further down the drain pipe hence, you may have to snake the drain. A drain snake or plumbing snake is a plumbing tool, which may not be easily available in homes because of its rare usage. A plumbing snake is often inexpensive and typical size for home use ranges from 15 to 50, but usually 25 is more than enough. After unscrewing the trap, insert the snake into the drain pipe and turn it clockwise to remove the clog. Be cautious while removing the snake, as the sludge may get sprayed in the surroundings because of its springy nature.

Slow drains may be caused by a blockage in the air vent pipes. You may need to snake the air vent on the roof to remove the blockage.

An overflowing sink may not be the worst plumbing problem, but it can pose severe risks. Do not treat your sink as a trash can. Knowing what to put down the sink will often prevent clogged pipes. If an overflowing sink is caused by severe plumbing issues, it is advisable to call for plumbing services in Edmonton. An overflowing sink can be prevented with cleaning and regular maintenance.
