Isn’t having a sink packed with stains and spots annoying? Isn’t dry and itchy skin depressing? Of Course, it is! The major cause of all this is hard water. It is a definite sign you need a water softener.

In Canada, a major water problem is the supply of hard water. As per a survey conducted by the Nova Scotia Environment, the range of hardness in drinking water in Canada is 120 to 180 mg. And in such a case, you are surely going to require a water softener. Basically, a water softener removes all the impurities present in the water and provides you with safe drinking water. Also, there are other benefits of a water softener. We have come up with 5 possible signs that show you will need a water softener.

1) Dry and Itchy Skin

Hard water consists of excess minerals like calcium and magnesium carbonates which are harmful for your skin. When these minerals come in contact with your skin, they cause dryness and promote clogged pores. Dry skin, in turn leads to irritated and scaly skin. In worst cases, it triggers intense skin conditions like eczema and dermatitis which gives rise to skin inflammation.

2) Gray and Fading Clothes

The presence of excessive minerals in hard water results in the damage of all kinds of fabrics. Rather than cleaning clothes, hard water damages it. It causes your clothes to discolor and allows the stains to settle it. You can fix this immediately, by adding vinegar to the fabric while washing clothes. But a water softener will make it easier for you as it filters the water and provides you with safe water which in turn avoid graying and fading clothes.

3) Limescale Build-up on your Appliances

The scale or the film of a thin layer of white powder which you notice on your appliances, dishes or faucets is formed due to hard water. The thin layer of white powder is nothing but the mineral deposit present in the hard water which is also known as ‘limescale.’ The limescale build-up can cause the following:

  • Reduction of the lifespan of appliances such as water tanks, water heaters, etc.

  • Brittle and broken dishes

  • Clogged pipes

4) Stains on your Sink

The stains or spots on your sink are formed when the tap water evaporates leaving calcium and magnesium behind. Any kind of stains that are left behind are the effects of hard water. You can use vinegar or a solution of bleach and dishwasher detergent to wipe these stains clean. But, the long-term remedy to avoid them is installing a water softener.

5) Constant Plumbing Repair

If you have steel water pipes, make sure you change them. Steel pipes always have a hard time dealing with hard water. The limescale build-up in steel clogs the supply of water causing leaks and other plumbing problems. Look out for copper or PVC pipes when you are replacing it with a steel pipe. Rather than repairing your plumbing system which is expensive, fix the problem with a water softener.
